How it works...
Basically children come and choose a book and read on their own or in small groups. It is great to see them enjoying and sharing a book with one another. There are some children who need extra help so a teacher or volunteer will sit and read with them -- hopefully bringing them a bit closer to enjoyment, understanding, and grade level. If children need to, they do their homework and then read. After homework is done and children have enjoyed their reading, they get to play educational games.
Getting children started...
The reading levels of the children who come to the library are quite diverse. There are some who are reading quite fluently in first grade (age 6), while there are others who are still at the initial stages of
deciphering a book. With these children, we sit and work with them at letter and sound recognition, until they are reading on their own. Children are paired so that more fluent readers read to those who still need more support. As children grow as readers, they learn to select books that are to their interest while appropriate to their reading level...
The library offers children several comprehension programs to help improve their literacy skills and their joy of books and reading.
